Funny ;was reading Hugh McIlvanney's column in The Sunday Times this week and suddenly realised I read it in his Scottish accent........not sure what that means...
He likes Binocular in the Champion Hurdle at Chelts this year btw (5.5 on Betfair) - don't know if his tipping is on a par with his writing tho. Have to say quality writing is not to be confused with prescience in gambling - always remember John Oaksey used to write nice copy about racing, but tipped more rubbish than Sheffield Council......

| Looking forward to reading Micheal Vaughans biography TIME TO DECLARE. Expect the former England skipper to get one or two grievencies off his back. His one regret not captaining an England side down under.

| The Greatest footballer England never had about Kevin Beattie is an incredible read. Inaugural PFA Young Player of the year in 1973 - but finished at 27 and so skint he was picking discarded cigarettes of the street for a smoke by 30. He even had the last rites administered due to a collapsed pancreas after chronic alcoholism. Sir Bobby Robson writes the foreword as Kevin was his favourite player and the one he rates as the best English born player he worked with. Think about that? He played with Tom Finney, Duncan Edwards and Boby Charlton and managed Bryan Robson, Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer...... the book is priced 14.99 and available from www.cultfigurepublishing.com

| A verbal disagreement turned into an ugly shouting match. Fists flew, tables were knocked over, drinks spilled, glasses smashed, light fittings were ripped from the wall, paintings were torn down and stamped on, blood flowed, doors were kicked in, and finally the police were called. It took twenty minutes to restore order and six men were arrested. The owner of the hall was in tears. He said "that's the last time I allow this hall to be used for a chess tournament!"
