I believe the one and the only EDDIE WARING, king of Rugby League Commentary, spent his latter years in Highroyds Hospital. I have to hold my hands up to ITV, who over the last 12 months have made great strides in educating us about this devil of deceases.

You are correct Halifaxparky he did, more is the pity that the N.H.S. decided in its 'wisdom' to sell the hospital with its extensive grounds (24 acres or more I think) to a housing developer. This has pushed people needing help into care in the community or in extreme cases into the hospitals in Leeds city center. Progress? I don't think so, if a patient wandered off a ward in High Royds because they were confused the chances were that they would be still in the grounds when discovered, in Leeds they would be straight into the uncaring city rush and traffic. Plus parking for visiting relatives was never a problem. At one time the hospital had its own branch-line from the railway, market gardens tended by patients, providing hobbies for them and making the hospital pretty much self sufficient as far as vegetables were concerned. I believe that the hospital was built by local businessmen and pledged to the community so were the N.H.S. within their rights to dispose of this immensely valuable asset for £22 million?

Good points there Robert. When this illness is on a vast increase, the Powers that be should be putting buildings like Highroyds up, not pulling them down.

I would love to know the legality of the N.H.S. taking over the running of High Royds and whether they did actually have the right to sell a gift to the local inhabitants.

Then there is Scaleboro Park, Meanwood hospital and I'm sure many more.

I wonder if anyone has ever challenged them?

I went to Collect my dad for day out the other day. A break from the  home he is in suffering with Alzeimers. He hardly knows who I am now, but one thing that continues to stun me is the sufferers from this illness have an astonishing talent when it comes to reciting the lyrics of their favourite songs from the past. I know this common knowledge in the medical field but if ever carers feel pressured, put on the favourite songs of your love ones. You ll be amazed at the results.

Back in September 2008, I kicked off this section by reporting that my poor Dad has the terrible desease of Alzeimers. I have to report that his life has been claimed by this cruelest of illnesses, and for everyone who has had, or is likely to have any relative or loved one with the same, brace yourself for a torrid time. Care for the elderly can be nowhere the required standard in some cases but I cannot report this my Dads case. All who have cared for him deserve medals. Read Mikes paragragh about his Mums same illness, and I must say it brought me great comfort. RIP Mr J Ferguson.

H.P.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your loved one.

My dear Mother in Law passed away last December having endured a terrible time before she finally gave in to this horrendous illness.

To not know your own daughter, but to know your Son in Law, was dreadful for both myself and my dear wife, and to not recognise your Grand daughter, who you worshipped, must be as undignified an ilness as it is possible to bear.

I am far from being religious, but you and I both know that really our loved ones are in a better place now.

Take care,

Paul Miller.
